The development department is the youngest organizational unit of the European Media Laboratory GmbH. It was set up as a consequence of the reorientation of EML after the establishment of the EML Research gGmbH.

The new focus on development and technology transfer made it necessary to restructure the personnel sector of the enterprise, reinforcing the research staff with professional software developers.

Although the nature of the topics dealt with at EML mean that the dividing line between research and development is anything but clear-cut, account has to be taken of the fact that, in terms of approach, research projects will necessarily differ from development assignments. In a research project the feasibility of the approach or design it comes up with can normally be adequately substantiated by a prototype or a demonstrator.

But this kind of software is a far cry from the quality level required for a product. Indeed it is sometimes said that the code resulting from a research project represents only about 10% of what is required for a product code in its final form.

Whether this is exaggerated or not, the members of the development department have two central tasks to perform:

  • Cooperating with the members of research projects to ensure that the standards, tools, and procedures required for a transferable code are employed at the research level.
  • Developing interesting research prototypes to a stage at which they can be passed on to system integrators or other technology partners.
